Tackling Cancer: Turning Every Tackle Into Hope at Iowa State

At Iowa State University, the fight against cancer becomes more than a cause — it becomes a commitment. The “Tackling Cancer” initiative, hosted by Cyclone football standout Jack Janikowski, transforms game-day performance into meaningful, measurable impact for families battling cancer.
Inspired by his brother Dean Janikowski and the pledge-based structure of the “More Than a Kick” model, Tackling Cancer operates as a season-long pledge campaign. Supporters commit to donating based on a custom point system tied directly to Jack’s defensive performance throughout the season.
The Tackling Cancer Point System
Every play matters — and every tackle earns points toward the fight:
- 0.5 Tackle (Assist) = 1 Point
- 1 Solo Tackle = 3 Points
- 2 Tackles in a Game = 5 Points
- 3 Tackles or a Sack = 10 Points
This structure allows fans to pledge a dollar amount per point scored during the season. The more impact on the field, the greater the impact off it.
How It Works — Example
If Jack records two tackles in one game — one solo tackle and one assisted tackle — the scoring would look like this:
- 1 Solo Tackle = 3 Points
- 1 Assisted Tackle = 1 Point
- Total = 4 Points for that game
If a supporter pledges $10 per point, that single game would generate a $40 donation toward supporting families affected by cancer.
More Than a Game
Tackling Cancer keeps the Iowa State community engaged all season long. Every defensive stop carries deeper meaning. Every stat line tells a story of generosity. Fans cheer not just for a win, but for a cause that unites Cyclone Nation in purpose.
This initiative proves that leadership extends beyond the field. Through collective commitment and a simple but powerful point system, Tackling Cancer turns effort into impact — and football into a force for good.
Together, we’re not just keeping score.
We’re tackling cancer.
